Spitzer Moves To Boost Influence Over Ground Zero Plans

The Spitzer administration wants to increase its involvement in redevelopment efforts at the World Trade Center site, and it plans to reinvigorate a development agency that the Pataki administration intended to close. Its announcement, made at a City Council hearing yesterday, came as the city and state laid out a timeline for altering the plans of a performing arts center at the site.

The president of the Empire State Development Corporation, Avi Schick, said at the hearing that the state would revive the anemic Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, the now lightly staffed redevelopment agency that Governor Spitzer once called an "absolute failure." The corporation has dispersed funds and coordinated development efforts at the former World Trade Center site for the past five years.

Californication: Lethem ventures west, leaving New York City spark ...

After years of kicking around the five boroughs of New York City, Jonathan Lethem has found a new home out West in his latest novel, "You Don't Love Me Yet" (Doubleday). Gone are the girls playing double-dutch on the sidewalk and the boys hustling for subway tickets. In their place are vegetarian zoo-worker guitarists and masturbation shoppe employees.

Welcome to California.

He's been here before in short stories and the back third of his last novel, "The Fortress of Solitude," but it's still far from home. By leaving his panacea and comfort zone, he's taking a risk.

Lethem, along with David Foster Wallace ("Infinite Jest") and Gary Shteyngart ("The Russian Debutante's Handbook"), leads the pack of today's comic novelists. "Motherless Brooklyn" and "Solitude," his past two novels, both set mainly in New York, rich in detail and ambiance, catapulted Lethem to the top of the literary heap.

NYC Mayor In Tri-State For Gun Initiative

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg joined 14 Tri-state mayors including Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory to announce his initiative "Mayors Against Illegal Guns" has come to the Tri-State.

Mayor Bloomberg says his effort began a year ago and has since gotten the support of 180 mayors across the country.

Part of his effort includes keeping congress from passing the Tiahrt Ammendment, which is an ammendment Mayor Bloomberg says keeps police from being able to track illegal guns, where they are coming from, and who is buying them.

He feels mayors are responsible for keeping their communities and police safe, and with the support of mayors across the nation, he believes his initiative will do just that.

Cincinnati Police confiscated 1468 guns in 2006.

"We don't find a lot of guns that come within the city.
